This week the SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the US) is hearing oral arguments on section 5 of the voting rights act. Shelby county in Alabama is challenging the constitutionality of the section of the law that states that there must be federal oversight of election administration, moreso in those states with a history of discriminatory voting practices, and that any changes affecting voters must first obtain approval of the DOJ (DEPT. of Justice). A process known as preclearance. Anyway Justice Scalia, arguing on the side of changing the voting rights act, stated that this was ' another example of the perpetuation of racial entitlements'. Seriously the words of a supreme court judge in the year 2013.
btw. The voting rights act was passed in 1965
